ABSTRACT

This chapter examines what technology is, and its uses and impacts as a resource, a source of coordination, a force or trend, and a source of change. It presents different electronic and non-electronic-based technologies impacting major sports events and their managers. From a practitioner’s perspective, the chapter discusses the use of technology and some of its limitations. It highlights consideration for the preference of type of communication a person wants to receive, knowing a manager’s target audience, common systems used to increase work efficiency, and accounting for different situational variables as important factors in the choice of technology. Technology is an important part of preparing and hosting major sports events. Because of the volume of people that must be recruited and trained with both generic and job-specific training, technology is part of best practices. It is also essential to managing the workforce of an event.
