ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the key components of the event wrap-up mode: decommissioning venues and functional areas; debriefing and evaluation; writing final reports and closing the books; and transferring the legacies. From a broader event evaluation perspective, it examines the four main periods: pre-Games research, pre-Games evaluation, Games-time evaluation, and post-Games evaluation. The chapter discusses the importance of incorporating stakeholders’ perceptions into the evaluation as they ultimately determine the success of the event, and the fact that stakeholders have their own event evaluations to do as well. It provides an overview of different approaches to undertaking a post-event economic analysis. The chapter presents some differences between one-off and recurring events regarding the wrap-up mode, and offers suggestions for future research associated with closing a major sports event. It outlines insights on personal coping strategies and perspectives on actually delivering a major sports event.
