ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the different types of workforce members that can be found in major sports events. It examines human resource management (HRM) processes as they pertain to major sports events: planning, staffing, performance appraisals, and organisational justice. The chapter briefly considers aspects of high-performing organisations; such organisations have natural work units, client relationships, a degree of discretion or control over how one performs their tasks, and open feedback channels. Within the planning part of HRM, job design and task definition are important aspects of the human resource manager’s responsibilities to ensure the motivation, commitment, and satisfaction of their counterparts. Besides planning, a key aspect of HRM is staffing. Staffing goes beyond focusing on the job to include a focus on the people and career considerations. The chapter provides key challenges and issues regarding workforce management include building a team, work conditions, leadership, managing momentum, performance and evaluations, and preparing for the end of the Games.
