ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to delve into the volunteer workforce, a key part of the sport event management literature. It explores different theories used to study event volunteers. The chapter examines volunteer motivation, commitment, and satisfaction, noting, for example, various types of volunteer motives. In exploring volunteer commitment and satisfaction, it discusses the importance of sense of community, inter-relationships between the concepts, and links to overall volunteer experience. The chapter provides some factors to consider before, during, and post-event to create a successful volunteer management programme. Research on organisational commitment has examined both volunteers and paid staff. Volunteer commitment has also been examined within the event management literature. The chapter offers an idea of the feelings and mind-set of both volunteers and managers, and presents examples of adjustments that can be implemented to clarify volunteer roles and tasks.
