ABSTRACT

Andrew Spanyi, a proponent and practitioner of enterprise business process management, believes that thinking along functional lines promotes silo thinking and turf protection, and an undue preoccupation with organizational structure. Functions are organizational units designed to deal with similar actions and processes – for example, marketing, operations, and human resources. Functions are designed by senior management and portrayed as organizational structures. Frederic Laloux went in search of the next generation organization and found a number that fitted his criteria. They all had common features, of which self-managed teams and self-organizing systems were two of the three essential elements of the next generation of organization. There are very few organizations where the decisions are made participatively about who works where, what they can and should do, how they should do it, who makes decisions, and why they’re doing it in the first place.
