ABSTRACT

Heroes are not heroes until they are heroes, yet at the same time something of the hero is discernible in the non-hero. Heroes usually do not set out to be subjects of folk songs. Those who do often are disappointed. The being-and-becoming aspect of heroes and heroism is considered in this chapter through the contemplation of several of the stories of heroes provided by students. Four themes – inclusiveness, loyalty, courage and humility – are presented and discussed. We meet some of the heroes whose stories will reappear throughout the book.
