ABSTRACT

There are certain ‘uses’ of things in themselves that could be analogous to ‘uses’ of modes of expression; they might form the basis of, or one axis of, a new Grid. Thus: money may be used to measure the status of a man or a woman, as in wergild, bride-purchase, religion. It can then be transferred to measure exchange values (commerce). It can then be debased in the sense of both change of base and change of value, i.e. to give substance to a fiction. For example:

Analyst fee: low ↔ high; to correspond to psychoanalytic value of the psychoanalyst, i.e. a measure of value.

Analyst fee: low ↔ high; to cloak and hide the value of the man or woman ‘psychoanalyst’. The monetary value is de-based as the communicative value of speech, the ‘currency of words’, becomes debased.
