ABSTRACT

A constant conjunction is a function of consciousness in the observer. The observer feels that it is a necessity for him that the conjunction should have a meaning for him. The constant conjunction must, as a matter of psychic necessity, then be found to have a meaning. The idea of causation is itself an assertion that certain elements are constantly conjoined and that the conjunction is one of cause and effect. The importance for the psychoanalyst of the range narcissism ↔ social-ism can be grasped by considering the close relationship of meaning and narcissism. Psychoanalysis is concerned with love as an aspect of mental development and the analyst must consider the maturity of love and ‘greatness’ in relation to maturity. The chapter explores some implications of the concurrence of elements of verbal with elements of geometrical formulation.
