ABSTRACT

The gap between ‘knowing phenomena’ and ‘being reality’ resembles the gap between ‘Knowing about psychoanalysis’ and ‘Being psychoanalysed’. Distinction between the ‘geometric’ and ‘arithmetic’ developments can be made thus: the geometric developments of points and line are primarily associated with the presence or absence, existence or non-existence, of an object. The geometric development is associated with depression, absence or presence of the object: the arithmetic development with feelings of persecution, the Kleinian theory of a paranoid-schizoid position. Mathematicians are aware that the progress of arithmetic is obstructed probably through some unsolved problem with regard to the nature of the discipline. Transformation in K has, contrary to the common view, been less adequately expressed by mathematical formulation than by religious formulations. Religious formulations come nearer to meeting the requirements of transformations in O than mathematical formulations.
