ABSTRACT

Belonging is often said to begin at birth, and it is widely accepted that the innate motivation we must connect with others is deeply embedded in our biological makeup. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate the fundamental importance of belonging, from the earliest stages of our lives and even back to the formative periods that precede them. We will consider the biological studies and neuropsychological research that have emphasised the importance of belonging for individuals in their early years through to adolescence.
