ABSTRACT

A feeling of rejection can dramatically undermine our sense of belonging and can at the same time create not only immense emotional anguish but also mimic the experience of physical pain. Our desire to belong is so pervasive that a fear of being rejected and not belonging can determine how we navigate our day-to-day life choices and decisions. This chapter will discuss why people are rejected and possible responses to rejection. It will examine the pain of rejection and underscore the devastating impact that rejection can have on our lives.
