ABSTRACT

Like every other aspect of life in the modern world, the nature of contemporary belonging is inevitably shaped to a significant degree by recent advances in communication technologies. We now can connect to more people, and in a wider variety of different ways, than ever before. Despite this unparalleled connectivity, loneliness is on the rise. While the long-term implications of our changing behavioural patterns have not yet been determined, this chapter will examine the available evidence and discuss how our sense of belonging to others can be helped or hampered in an age of technology.
