ABSTRACT

Belonging is paradoxical in many ways. Belonging to an outgroup, by definition, implies exclusion from an ingroup. However, exclusion from an outgroup does not automatically return an individual to the ingroup. On the contrary, it can often send a person down a path that seeks inclusion and belonging in an outgroup that departs from societal norms in a more extreme way. This chapter explores the darker side of belonging to groups that deviate from the status quo.
