ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 is the first of three analysis chapters and as such presents a detailed examination of the opening and closing phases of five video-recorded lessons using qualitative and quantitative approaches and tools. The analysis begins by examining the pedagogical functions and discursive features of talk specifically delineating the interactional characteristics of questions, signposting and teacher feedback. The interactional structure of opening and closing phases is then examined in detail. The final section of this chapter presents a corpus analysis of openings and closings structured around the key tools of frequency list, keyword lists generated against three comparison corpora and concordancing and clusters.
