ABSTRACT

When it comes to working in the entertainment lighting field, the basic principles of conduct and professionalism for any occupation apply. Usually lighting's purpose is to provide illumination, while many productions also use lighting to enhance the performance. The title lighting director is often shortened to just “LD.” This of course is a common moniker for the term lighting designer. Confusion can easily occur when a lighting director identifies him or herself as the show’s “LD.” The very nature of a lighting rig entails positioning thousands of pounds of electrical equipment above and around a stage. Safety for all concerned must constantly be paramount at every moment. Never allow safety to slip in favor of price reductions, time savings, laziness, or other reasons. Since the early 1900s, the phrase, “the show must go on” has been used in the entertainment field to remind all involved that the show itself is the most important factor of any presentation.
