ABSTRACT

In this chapter, readers are presented with a short story about suppressed talent by the late Spanish novelist Almudena Grandes. This leads to the investigation of some well-known popular singers in the Spanish-speaking world, protest songs and, more generally, popular musical genres: not only the internationally familiar jazz and rap, etc., but also, more specifically to the Spanish-speaking world, reggaetón. Vocabulary work additionally looks at verbs which are related to nouns and other verbs. Grammar topics are the use of the subjunctive with verbs of influence, verbs used with particular prepositions, pronominal verbs which express accidental or unexpected actions and further study of the use of the preterite and imperfect tenses. Production exercises consist of the writing of dialogue following on from the short story and the presentation of a reasoned argument on the dangers to privacy posed by the internet.
