ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the authors guide readers in exploring a text written by Luz Nereida Pérez Jiménez which looks at African elements in the vocabulary of Puerto Rican Spanish. The projects review what is known about the original inhabitants of the island, the history of slavery and its effect on the Caribbean area, as well as the characteristics of the present-day Puerto Rican Spanish.
