ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on a text written by David Galeano Olivera which considers the contact between Spanish and Guaraní in Paraguay, describing popular Paraguayan variations on the game of football and their associated terminology. The projects cover the history of the area and the reasons for the strong survival of Guaraní, the linguistic characteristics of Guaraní itself and the cultural importance of football in the country.

This final chapter looks at the status and nature of Spanish in the United States and the phenomenon of “Spanglish” using a text written by Michelle Roche Rodríguez. The projects concern the history of Mexico and the United States and the circumstances surrounding the emigration to the United States of Cubans and Puerto Ricans. There are practical examples of borrowings from English and comparisons of English-influenced expressions with those of standard Spanish; reflection is invited on the extent to which “Spanglish” can be said to be a new language. Finally, research is encouraged on Spanish-English code-switching in notices, advertisements and poetry and song.
