ABSTRACT

International development assistance is not only task of the public or private sectors, but various types of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well. The reach of NGOs varies from truly global large NGOs that are present in almost each of the Global South countries to local grassroots NGOs that are important for specific local aspects of development. Large non-profit foundations, such and Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, have also become important in international development assistance, including in Africa. In addition, large for-profit organisations, such as Nike Corporation, have significant corporate responsibility development projects in Africa.

The recent dynamics in the international development cooperation, innovations and the beyond aid agenda have brought changes to the scopes and roles of NGOs in development cooperation. For many NGOs, innovations and entrepreneurship have replaced the traditional aid underlining the importance of human rights and poverty alleviation. In addition, many NGOs now collaborate with the private sector.
