ABSTRACT
This chapter explains how to use a physical score to connect to character and given circumstances, as reintroduce vocabulary from the Stanislavski tradition to our process. The character score has become one of the easiest tools to extract from this pedagogy for use in more traditional processes as a warm up, or in lieu of re-reading one's character biography. The near past is loosely defined as a day or thirty minutes before the scene begins. This physical score has proven most successful in preparing actors to enter a scene when they choose to embody the moments just before the scene begins.
