It discusses opportunities and challenges of online education along with advantages of online technology in face-to-face and blended courses. The chapter defines the program and target audience, and assesses program demand. It provides an overview of the course development process, discusses the benefits of having a digital strategy and reviews the ways of identifying faculty, choosing a learning management program, choosing a transition approach. The chapter identifies further resources needed for online programs. Online programs can significantly affect an institution’s overall reputation. Consequently, it is essential for the institution’s leadership (e.g., deans, provosts, or principals) to assess the likelihood of success before making the decision to commit to an online program. The most visible element of online education is the technical structure used to offer the courses.
