ABSTRACT

The chapter briefly discusses in its introductory section the recent developments in the promotion of GM crops under the UPA and the NDA governments. It further highlights the conflict that took place between the different ministries under the UPA government and the way in which the BJP, the biggest party in NDA, has been influenced by the members of RSS wings in taking any political decision on GM crops. The chapter then gives a brief account of the historical background of cotton cultivation in India and how it plays a significant role in its contribution to the national economy. GM technology in the form of Bt cotton was approved for the first time only to increase the cotton yield. The chapter then critically analyses the polarised views of the proponents and opponents of Bt cotton cultivation by reviewing the recommendatory reports of committees formed by the parliament and the Supreme Court of India.
