ABSTRACT

The Introduction outlines the central concepts for the analysis of Brexit populism and its comedy. The general connections between humour, comedy and populism are explained before a detailed definition of populism is given. Populism is defined as a dichotomous and ambiguous six-point mode or framework for political communication. The introduction provides a definition that is tested in the coming chapters, as populism, its humour and rhetoric are outlined. The Introduction also explains that referenda are a populist mode of democracy, details the method of analysis used in the book, before each chapter and its central arguments are summarised.
