ABSTRACT
Hikers who blogged about their experiences with wildlife on the Appalachian Trail (AT) described all kind of species that they met as being cute. Indeed, rather than just small, furry animals being described as adorable, it seems that virtually any wild species could be perceived and described as cute by at least some of the people who encountered them. This chapter describes the traits that are purported to make up the ‘cute aesthetic’, as well as the complex emotions that are involved in responding to perceived cuteness, and explores why hikers may have so frequently responded to animals that they encountered as being cute. Far from being trivial or shallow, the perception of cuteness in other animals is significant, particularly as this cute response frequently had a direct impact on the life of the animal, including staring, following, chasing, attempting to touch or feed the animal, or pick him up.
