ABSTRACT

The original meaning of “management” was to “take care of something” which feels like a good definition for arts managers to keep in mind. Management can be thought of in a number of ways – as a function, as a set of activities and as a team of people. Many aspects of people management such as empowerment, feedback, communication, recruitment and selection and payment may be done differently across organisations but all need to be done. The authors provide a series of examples that appear to suggest a difference but which could have been solved by some very traditional management processes. J. Tusa separates leadership from management with the management list containing all the functions with his leadership list full of personal qualities such as being authentic and passionate, possessing courage and being flexible, inspiring trust and articulating vision.
