ABSTRACT

The quality that helps best in managing stress is resilience. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, resilience is about springing back, resuming original form, readily recovering from depression. In B. Walmsley’s paper about the West Yorkshire Playhouse, he describes a process put in place by the Arts Council of England to help arts organisations develop their “resilience” by promoting innovation, artistic excellence and robust business planning. J. Carlopio, G. Andrewartha and H. Armstrong describe three strategies to manage stress: eliminate it, use reactive strategies to make the situation more manageable and be proactive by building resilience. S. Wilson and S. R. Ferch list characteristics that contribute to resilience: having a supportive environment in which change can occur, the development of personal autonomy and self-esteem, one’s emotional maturity, creative thinking and having a sense of hope for the future.
