ABSTRACT

The gratification of producing art is seen as partial compensation for their labour and one could say that the largest subsidy to the arts has always come from arts workers themselves. For artists, work and art are usually indistinguishable and this means their identity is also tied to work. The most challenging aspect of working with artists is working with “divas”. Artists are sometimes described as having huge egos and being overly demanding but sometimes there is good reason for behaviour that could be seen as excessive or irrational. In summary, artists on one level are simply people with ideas and ambitions, families and loved ones, needs and fears, like all the other people in students’ organisation. Artists synthesize the ephemeral into something tangible for a society and as such are often at the edge of societal change.”.
