ABSTRACT

Decisions can be made based on analysis or intuition, evidence or experience. They can be rational or political, quantitative or qualitative. The decisive decision maker values action, speed, efficiency and consistency. The flexible decision maker is focused on speed as well but they also value adaptability. The integrative decision maker is equally happy to explore a wide range of views and decision-making becomes a process of collecting input. This creative style comes across as highly participative. There are a multitude of ways to make poor decisions such as leaving decisions to the last minute, making the obvious decision rather than the considered one, failing to ask the right question in the process, getting distracted by irrelevant facts, not collecting enough information or consulting the right people. Decision-making within any organisations can be political but the tensions can become more obvious and challenging within arts organisations.
