ABSTRACT

For individuals drawn to something pro bono, part time and less executive, new beginnings start with the intention to move on from being an Head of University (HoU). This creates a different set of decision points. For some people, the choice is simple and easy: to retire, in a traditional sense. This is a chance to rest and recuperate from years of effort, time pressures, challenges and demands and to pursue other interests, activities and relationships. Many HoUs find that they can use their experience and expertise as an independent member of a governing body. Most universities seek to have at least one recently retired HoU as a board member. A sometimes-helpful element of a phased approach to new beginnings could involve an opportunity to write and distil people's thoughts about one or more aspects of higher education. The ‘interim’ world is often associated with filling a gap while a permanent HoU is recruited.
