ABSTRACT

The incoming leader will be dealing with the message sinking in while also beginning to think about this new chapter in their life and career. In parallel, they will be coping with the challenges of exiting from their existing leadership responsibilities. The foregoing definition resonates with the experience of needing to understand transitions through the dimension of time. They involve a process that takes time, whether over a shorter or longer period. They are not an event with a clear beginning and end where decisive action can change a situation quickly. Changing conditions, at a macro or micro level, are often about changes in context, environment or culture, whether for individuals or for organisations. Although many aspects of leadership are perennial, applying across many situations, leadership can also be highly contextual; what works in one setting or historical period may not work in other contexts or circumstances.
