ABSTRACT

The heads of universities (HoUs) whom people interviewed had a chance to reflect on their leadership journey, the aspects that had gone well, the aspects that had been challenging, the variety of transitions that they had made and what they had learned along the way. Listening is central to enabling the author to be effective, picking up on small cues which allows people to understand where someone is coming from, to making judgments about people – not something that can be taught. Change is not the same as transition. Change is situational. Transition is psychological. Change is external, transition is internal. The problem is people do not like endings. Wherever people are in their leadership journey, and whichever professional transition they are currently navigating, people wish one continuing good progress. People welcome hearing more of one's experiences and reflections, to add to those people have included.
