ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of the head of university (HoU). It examines the complexity of the role and how it is distinctive in a number of ways from many other CEO-level roles. A CAO role is linked to but different from the role played by a deputy vice-chancellor (DVC) or provost, if such a role exists. Partly depending on the size and focus of the university, two different sets of conditions might arise in relation to this domain. The CEO role will always be a major focus for an HoU. The CCO role is one to which all new HoUs need to pay attention. Then, the chapter offers perspective of different role dimensions. It also highlights the diverse range of expertise and experience that is demanded (not always realistically) of those who lead universities. The chapter concludes by exploring what can arise if the role is not aligned sufficiently to the context and needs of the university.
