ABSTRACT

The university had been somewhat economical with the truth in relation to the unified front of the colleges. Most new leaders, given the time and opportunity, want to connect and engage with as many people as possible at all levels inside the institution, whether the university is situated in one locality or it is spread across campuses and, perhaps, across countries. Students are, of course, at the heart of all universities, and several student-focused and student-related issues form a strong part of institutional strategies, activities and culture. The ‘student experience’ covers a wide range of expectations at the policy level, many of which are part of regulatory frameworks. In addition, certain student-centred issues have been receiving political and media attention in recent times, including value for money for students; graduate outcomes, degree results and employment; widening access and participation; freedom of speech on campus; and students’ physical and mental safety and well-being.
