ABSTRACT

The term antioxidant has become one of the holy grails for marketers of a wide variety of food and supplemental products. For many, as with the term “organic,” the term “antioxidant,” has become synonymous to better health and the prevention of a myriad of ailments. In essence, antioxidants have been misconceived to become the magic bullet for health and longevity. This chapter will review the four misconceptions most consumers embrace regarding the purported benefits of antioxidants, as well as the supplementation of them. Further, it will clarify why consumers should refrain from ingesting supplemental antioxidants.
