ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 presents a wide variety of community mental health programs, offering the experience of various combinations of goals, academic and governmental participants, and environments. A few are available in much detail: Boston University, Massachusetts General Hospital/Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center, Tufts Medical School Community Mental Health Center, and the University of Heidelberg/Mannheim community psychiatry program. Some resulted in successes, some in struggles, and some in failures; they all have something to teach, though not producing universal conclusions.
