ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the premise of the book by introducing its broad scheme and outline. It provides a background of the mediascapes of Bangladesh and discusses the nature of scholarly engagement with television news and audiences. It unfolds the key concepts and arguments of the book, such as media culture, media rituals, localized public sphere and media practices. An ethnography of television in Bangladesh highlights the dynamic interface among news making and viewing, journalists and audiences. The book discusses how such an interface is vital for understanding television media culture.
