ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a synoptic history of the emergence and development of news television in Bangladesh. Instead of drawing a linear and merely technical outline of the television industry, it juxtaposes the development of television with political transformation and public response. Such an approach aids in highlighting some of the key indicators of television media culture, such as democracy, control, censorship, public culture and the history of mediation in Bangladesh. The discussion, however, occurs in the regional backdrop of South Asia, adding nuances to the historical account. The role of the state, market forces and their interactions with the burgeoning television media industry are outlined.
