ABSTRACT

This chapter underlines a possible interaction among media, culture and society by concentrating on the practices associated with news-based television. It highlights the contemporary popular student mobilizations in Bangladesh such as the Shahbag protest by bloggers and online activists and the NO VAT protest by private university students, among others. In addition, it shows that news television mediates these mobilizations. Consequently, it invokes newer forms of mediated social movements in the small towns. Further, this chapter provides crucial insights about the spread of fake news in the wake of the growing popularity of social networking sites in Bangladesh. It highlights the recent trends of mainstream television channels incorporating digital platforms.
