ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the main subject of the book: how security can be organised in the Indo-Pacific region against the backdrop of an increasing great power contest between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. The main thesis underpinning this book is that great power competition is back, with detrimental impacts on the existing security order system of the Indo-Pacific region. The main purpose of the book is to find a practical way to manage burgeoning conflict and maintain a durable regional order. To that end, it proposes a new Indo-Pacific equilibrium as a building block for a regional order that is more constructive than confrontational.
