ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book by arguing that US foreign policy should be guided by a clear-sighted assessment of contemporary realities. The rise of China and its eventual intent to contest US hegemony should be seen as just another legitimate and entirely predictable episode in the eternal journey of international relations. The rise of China is not an upset to the natural cause of things but part of it. There is no end to history, only evolution. But because this latest step in the evolution of international relations is upsetting the established status quo order with which the vast majority of stakeholders are more or less comfortable, China’s new status is a challenge that must be managed. This book has showed just how considerable a challenge it is, and it contributes to the literature and discourse by proposing one possible way to meet this challenge.
