ABSTRACT

This chapter begins the discussion of order by looking into the emergence of Pax Americana in Asia, the twists and turns the US-led liberal hegemonic regional order has taken and which defining characteristics are still relevant today. Moving forward chronologically, the chapter continues by investigating how both narrative and practice of an interdependent Asia-Pacific was overtaken by a more competitive Indo-Pacific narrative. Contemporary definitions of the Indo-Pacific are still too often stuck at geography. But while not trivial, geography is the least revealing level of analysis. Going beyond the seemingly obvious, this chapter looks into the true nature of the Indo-Pacific, its story, broader character, structural parameters, and the immediate implications of this shift for regional order. Closing on an optimistic note, this chapter identifies the Indo-Pacific’s great diversity as the region’s greatest strength. The region’s superstructure offers ample opportunities for new partnerships and strategic shifts. It is predestined for a strength through solidarity approach.
