ABSTRACT

In order to ensure that the collection is preserved and well-managed to maximise re-use, it is important that staff are trained effectively. As in most libraries or archives, a good awareness of user needs is vital to the success of the service provided, as is the mechanism to update this as needs change. One way of achieving this is to organise staff so they spend part of their time answering enquiries and supplying information and material, and part cataloguing the material. The catalogues produced will reflect the awareness of user requirements gained from dealing with enquiries, and the staff will be able to use the catalogues more effectively because of their personal experience in helping to create them. Staff must be fully conversant with copyright issues, firstly so that they can assist users, but also to ensure that the library or archive is not involved in any potentially expensive legal disputes, where material has been used without permission.
