ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the two case studies to provide a coherent and detailed picture of the impact of the Internet on a particular organisation — and to set the discussion firmly in a particular news environment. Two very different case studies have been chosen: one a very established and traditional news organisation and the other a news organisation that is very much a child of the nineties. The development of Internet use at The Guardian has been sporadic and although the Research and Information Unit was not slow to become aware of its value, there was a delay in obtaining access. Journalists do have access to online services from their own desks through the Atex system. The general feeling among those who use the Internet for information seeking is that it is employed, as by journalists at other national newspapers, for consulting online newspapers, official sites of well known organisations and government produced web documents.
