ABSTRACT

The notion of believing in the inherent abilities of members of the X-workforce and providing an environment conducive to their growth is encompassed in the first component of the NAKED model: Necessary Freedom. One of the most common ways managers violate this principle is by obsessively looking over X’ers’ shoulders. X’ers want the authority to make basic decisions without always having to get approval. They seek task ownership, as opposed to being spoon-fed. In exchange for expanded autonomy, X’ers must indicate to managers the degree of independence which best suits them. Recognizing that the X-workforce thrives on autonomy stands out as a significant motivating factor of which managers can take advantage. To make Necessary Freedom plausible, X’ers must earn their managers’ respect, demonstrate they can be trusted, and show they can handle autonomy.
