ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to encourage participants to think about people in the organization doing their work—communicating, planning, completing projects, having meetings, working in teams or individually, peers, supervisors. Once participants have a feel for their immediate environment, they can move outward to the larger environment, progressing step-wise to an increasingly larger unit or grouping, as in a division or district outside the organization. Ideally, they should be able to build a mental representation, or model, of an organization based outside the United States. Most restraining forces could be the opposite of the driving forces. However, most restraining forces are ones which decrease the person’s ability to function and interrupt work flow, such as assignment to unfamiliar projects and working with reduced staff, among others. Restraining forces can range from internal auditors to company-imposed standards related to environmental protection and safety.
