ABSTRACT

“Source reduction tops the list of solid waste management options adopted by the US Environmental Protection Agency and endorsed by most states and localities.” “Waste reduction as we see it means packaging restrictions, limits on the development of new disposable products, as well as reductions in toxic constituents in products that ultimately find their way into the municipal waste stream.” Redesign and source reduction are imperative in alleviating the garbage dilemma. Reusing the end products until they have outlived their usefulness means getting the most out of our resources, both renewable and nonrenewable. “Synthetic glues that are commonly used in binding books and magazines can create grave difficulties by causing a sticky residue in the paper-making plant. Some modern inks are actually formulated to resist dispersion in water. Designing new products for easier recycling at the end of their first life can help resolve the issues, and maximise reuse opportunities.”
