ABSTRACT

Many companies, large and small prefer to deal with a recycler, broker, or consultant who can provide a total solution. Establish an informal network of people who have already worked on recycling and waste minimization programs, as well as those who want to get involved. The former will have valuable experience that will save time, effort, and money. Recycling companies and consultants can be invaluable members of the task force and on-going committees. The plan is most effective when it is written, has quantifiable objectives and time lines, is approved and supported by top management, and is communicated regularly throughout the organization. Long-term recycling coordinators who are respected individuals “within the ranks,” like Cheryl LaPerna at AT&T in New Jersey and Marilyn May at AT&T Power Systems, will be able to enroll a lot of people quickly. The most impact may come from curbing consumption by duplexing lengthy documents, or from reducing disposal costs by recovering and recycling waste paper.
