ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the different types or pieces of evidence an officer might encounter at a crime scene and how to properly collect and package that evidence. Clothing can generally be packaged in the standard paper envelope or bag and sealed at the seams with the officer’s initials and/or star number. On the clothing item itself, the officer should place his or her particular mark or star number in an easily found location, using indelible ink that will contrast with the clothing. Firearms should be handled so as to minimize contamination or destruction of any evidence, specifically fingerprints or other trace evidence. Small guns, pistols or pistol types, are to be handled by the checkered grips or by the edge of the trigger guard. To properly transport the firearm, a box and string should be utilized. Money should be packaged in a separate type of envelope. Most agencies utilize money-for-identification envelopes.
