ABSTRACT
Democracy is not only about having multi-parties, not only about having elections on a five year basis. All elections in Guyana have been critical elections. Elections in Guyana come at a particular juncture in terms of changes in the global economy. One of the particular problems that Guyana faces has to do with the ethnic composition of the country. Structural adjustment policies cause immense problems even where ethnicity is not a problem. Trade union neutrality is not defensible as a principle. One of the fundamental tragedies of Guyana is that it has embarked on an ideology which has subverted the economy and its political system because there is no communist state in the world that has a plurality of parties in existence, none.
