ABSTRACT

Helene Deutsch own case load became two-thirds American. She took some American candidates for half a year, and then later they would come back for another several months; if Sigmund Freud had done the same thing himself she would not have worried about it so much. Fritz Wittels, who had once left the Vienna society in a conflict over Stekel and then later had been accepted back, was already in New York; he placed articles about Helene in newspapers, one of them describing her as “Freud’s foremost feminine disciple.” Helene grew so hysterical about the military action that Felix, for the moment at a loss, asked Martin to go into her room and see if he could control her. From on board ship Felix Deutsch let Helene know how he was doing; he worked on his English, and made plans for what he would do on his arrival.
